bankers: one or two sheets of shuttering ply and the
scaffold boards to form the edges
Gauging boxes
Larry – garden rake or hoe
Shovels
Screen – sheet of exmet fixed to a wood frame and
a stand
Watering cans with roses
Drum cement mixer or paddle pan mixer
Protective Clothes: Rubber
boots Safety Equipment: Eye
wash
Overalls
Large vessel of water
Gloves with gauntlets
Goggles
Face mask Materials:
Sharp sand
Helmet
Lump lime
Agricultural Lime
Brick Dust
Method:
Measure with a gauging box:
6 parts sand, 1 part lump lime, if the quick lime
contains
pieces the size of a brick bat
OR
7 partssand, 1 part lump lime if the
quick lime contains
pieces the size of
walnuts
Measure the sand
into the banker.
Dampen the sand with
the watering can and rose.
Make a depression in
the sand to contain the lime about 75 deep.
Sprinkle with water
until the reaction is started.
Cover the reacting
lime with sand.
Cover the heap wih
tarpaulin,2 layers of hessian or polythene
Leave for a week or
longer.
Break open the heap
and mix the ingredients.
Throw through the
screen.
Make a heap of rough
stuff.
Knock up the rough
stufff in a cement mixer or the paddle pan
mill, do not use a
roller pan mill.
Add the chalk and or the
brick dust.
